Over 100 Bangladesh Garment Workers Hurt in a Protest

Police clash with garment workers in industrial estates that had stalled because Ashulia demanding salary increases.

Saturday’s clashes between police and striking garment workers in Bangladesh have been injured over 100 people.

Police opened fire with rubber bullets and tear gas to control protesters who threw stones at police in Ashulia industrial area after workers left the job in the garment factories and demanded a raise.

Police said they now controlled the area near Dhaka after the protests that led to 50 garment factories closed. Eyewitnesses from the labor group said that about 100 garment workers were injured, while police said 40 policemen were injured during the clash.

Workers demanded a minimum salary of about 70 U.S. dollars per month. Their current salary is below 30 dollars per month.

The garment industry is the backbone of Bangladesh economy.
